Our thoughts on the most anticipated mobile game

Posted on December 12, 2016 at 7:29 am

If you don’t know what we’re talking about then you probably haven’t browsed your mobile app store recently. It is, of course, Mario Run. It’s safe to say that we’ve all been expecting big things with Nintendo taking a seriously long time to release this game, but so far it hasn’t lived up to its hype. So why is it such a failure? Well, the biggest problem is that it’s just too simple. It’s a one-touch game like many but after playing 10 levels we can confirm there aren’t’ many challenges. The old Mario games were annoyingly tricky. That’s why they were so addictive. The fact that you’d have to start all over again made it quite fun, but the new game is just a bit more of a cuter, baby version, so the hardcore gamers may struggle to enjoy it. We’d say this one is more for young children, but we hope Nintendo make it more fun and difficult with future updates.

Bringing out a board game this Christmas

Posted on November 23, 2016 at 12:51 am

Family time at Christmas is wonderful, it’s all about eating together, watching films, sharing jokes and perhaps even playing the occasional board game. At Christmas, these ‘old style’ games are still popular. You know the ones we’re talking about, like Monopoly, Chess, Drafts, Cluedo and Scrabble to name a few. There are plenty of these games to choose from but there are always new ones being made. You can get games that are a bit more specific like those based on one TV show or movie franchise. Friends Scene It is a great example as is the Only Fools and Horses TV Quiz game. Whatever you do this Christmas be sure to put playing a retro board game on our list. It’s part of the festive fun and it makes for a pleasant evening’s entertainment with family and friends on a cosy Christmas night. It also stops people falling asleep too!

Pokémon Go cools down

Posted on October 17, 2016 at 12:45 pm

There’s no denying it; Pokémon was one of the most surprising success stories of the year and it kick started a new form of gaming, or so it seemed to. The fact of the matter is the game has peaked and interest has died off recently. Several months ago you couldn’t walk down the street without people playing Pokémon but times have changed quickly and people have moved on. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still hugely popular and there are millions of people playing it across the globe but media attention has slowed down, the crazy clowns for Halloween seem to have taken over and you only have to look at Google trends to see that Pokémon has enjoyed its peak. Augmented reality gaming will without a doubt continue and we could see a Harry Potter game soon if rumours are true, but we’re pleased to say that there are unlikely to be any further Pokémon Go updates from us until something big happens, like a new release.

I am Setsuna

Posted on August 7, 2016 at 7:38 pm

I am Setsuna is a Japanese role-playing game that has recently been released worldwide on the Playstation 4 and the Playstation Vita. It’s set in a land engrossed by continuous winter and it follows a mercenary and his charge, a maiden named Setsuna. She must offer herself as a sacrifice at a sacred shrine to appease hostile demons, so the storyline is incredibly sad and heartfelt. But this turns out to be its major downfall and we’ll tell you why. Sadness starts off powerful but soon becomes tiresome. The whole theme of the game is sadness and if you play it long enough you’ll be sad too! A lack of balance ruins the game and it doesn’t make for a very entertaining or addictive storyline. I would have happily stopped playing this after 10 minutes if I didn’t have to review it!

FIFA 17 now ready to preorder

Posted on June 23, 2016 at 9:21 pm

It seems strange talking about FIFA just after the season has come to a close but it’s now available to pre-order on the Xbox One and the PS4, so it’s worth mentioning some of this year’s changes.

Story Mode

This is the biggest change, FIFA has finally bowed down and agreed to create a story mode. As a young footballer, you’ll face on-field and off-field battles on the way to becoming a global superstar. Alex Hunter may not be a name you’re instantly familiar with, but he’s the star of The Journey and, with luck, this could be a mode that delivers for years to come. FIFA will give us a glimpse into the life of a professional footballer and not everything is pretty. Of course, the gameplay isn’t likely to change much and that’s purely because they seemed to have it mastered with FIFA 16, but this is the biggest change of the lot and it’s going to make FIFA 17 one to remember.

Why I pulled out the old Gameboy

Posted on May 14, 2016 at 10:00 pm

Oh, how I used to love my Gameboy. I’m not talking about the Gameboy Advanced or the Gameboy Colour, I’m talking about the original. I loved the simplicity of the green screen and the ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons and so I pulled it out recently to have a bit of a play. It was just as fun as it used to be and I guess I can now consider myself a ‘retro gamer’. The sounds brought the memories of my childhood back, and I guess the only real downside is the fact that the screen was too dark. This used to bug me back in the day and it does even more now, especially as we’re used to brightly lit HD screens. I’ll always love my Gameboy and the one and only game I used to play; Super Mario Land.

Sony and Xbox Cross Play – Yay or Nay?

Posted on April 26, 2016 at 9:13 pm

Gaming giants Microsoft dropped a major bombshell earlier this week, confirming that it was open to the possibility of cross-platform play between the consoles.

The company’s recent announcement meant that Xbox One vs PS4 multiplayer could one day become a reality, just like it has for Xbox One and Windows 10.

But Sony would have to be on board for anything like this to happen and considering the success of the PS4, the Japanese gaming giant would seemingly have little to gain. A Sony spokesperson said that the company would be happy to talk to any publishers or developers about such an arrangement.

“PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002. We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross-platform play.”

There’s no mention of Microsoft or Xbox One in all that, but they clearly haven’t ruled anything out.

Fallout 4 – 3 Months on

Posted on February 22, 2016 at 4:18 pm

Fallout 4, the continuation of one of the greatest game franchises to date, was first released in the UK on the 10th of November 2015, and just over 3 months on we can have a clear idea on the response to the game from the general gaming population. What this has clearly illustrated is that, for anybody who has yet to purchase the game, do so, now.

Fallout 4 is a game that is truly massive in scale, with over 100 hours worth of gameplay potential. It is a first person shooter game but set in a dystopian future following a Nuclear War, there are significant survivalist elements to the game too.

In the game, you will face a variety of tasks, such as fighting bad guys and improving the lot of different human communities struggling to survive. You will also have to build bases in an innovative format.
