CS:GO And Its Unique Economy

Posted on March 11, 2015 at 3:15 pm

CS:GO (Counter-Strike: Global Offensive) is a traditional online shooter. Traditional in the sense that it uses gameplay mechanics first seen a the original ‘Counter-Strike’, a game released 16 years ago.

Traditional in this sense but CS:GO has a unique and very modern player driven economy attached to it.

Available in the game as random drops are crates. These crates can be opened with keys that are available for purchase in game. Also linked to the game is a virtual marketplace where players can sell crates and the contents of crates alike. The crates contain weapon skins for use in the game.

Its quite a complicated system but after playing the game for a short time you pick up how it works.

The interesting thing though is that some of the weapon skins can sell for hundreds of dollars on the in-game marketplace.  This is a lot of money for a virtual item that can only be used in a single game and within actual playtime only.

But it’s the players who decide the monetary value of these items. They’ve decided they are worth this amount of money, so they are worth that much in game.
